Drop-in Classes (taught by Melanie and staff teachers)
Vinyasa Yoga: (MOVE!) A series of poses linked with the breath. An intense movement class that challenges your balance, increases strength and promotes stamina. This style of yoga sculpts the body and tunes the breath. A minimum of 3 sequences are practiced during each class. Please give yourself a few classes to learn and be comfortable with the sequencing.
Hatha Yoga: (STOP/START!) Hatha yoga means “sun and moon.” It literally refers to the postures/poses practiced in any style yoga class. In this class, we focus on a sequence of postures (asanas) that balance all areas of the body, held for up to one minute. Standing poses and poses on the floor are incorporated. An eclectic mix each week. Partner yoga is sometimes practiced in portions of this class.
Yin Yoga: (DON’T MOVE!) Laying and seated postures are held longer giving time for the connective tissues around the joints to soften and stretch. Soothing and calming , this sequence of poses particularly focuses on the hips and hamstrings. This physical focus on stillness allows prana to move freely through the entire body and helps loosen the mind’s resistance to stillness. Upper arm strength is involved in many of the poses. A mentally challenging class……a meditation. Can you be still?
Beginning Yoga: Every Saturday at noon this class, offered as a six-week session, is designed for those new to yoga. Each week one of our three styles of yoga is taught at a slower pace with more explanation of the names and workings of the poses. After learning each style for 6 weeks, you are ready to drop-in to any class that fits your schedule.
Restorative Yoga:Developed by Judith Lasater and based on the Iyengar prop system, restorative yoga is a deep healing and releasing type of Hatha Yoga. We practice approximately six different poses using bolsters, blankets, eye pillows and sandbags, resting in each pose for a minimum of 5 minutes to a maximum of 20 minutes. Breath awareness and observing your thoughts is the focus of restorative yoga. Once the body lets go and becomes still, the breath and the mind become calm. Through this meditative approach, we bring ourselves into a state of deep relaxation, and the innate intelligence of the body returns and reintegrates the system to its natural state of balance and peace. You will be pampered and leave these classes feeling completely refreshed. This class is offered on a semi-monthly basis only, and is limited to 5 people. A reservation is required by phoning the studio at 553-9642. Classes are held one or two Sundays a month from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Price is $20 if paid in advance; $25 at the door. You do not need your yoga mat for this class. This is SOCK season now! Wear ‘em!
Pregnancy Yoga Yoga for expecting moms helping them to develop the flexibility, concentration and strength needed during the transformative time of pregnancy. Breath and relaxation techniques are utilized, helping the moms connect to the experience of pregnancy and their developing babies. Time will be given to share stories and connect with other moms.
